LeeAnn also has a passion for working with individuals and families in the LGBTQIA community. LeeAnn has a heart for helping the individual explore and find congruence within the many narratives they may experience or hold about their own sexuality and gender. Family support is so necessary but can also pose many challenges in this journey. LeeAnn helps parents and family members to explore their own experiences and to bring healing to each family system. Many of those she has worked with come from a Christian background and seek to work through incongruence, division or trauma from the church.
A message for the individual:
Regardless of where you are in terms of awareness in exploring or discovering your sexuality and/or gender I would love to meet you there. Many that I have worked with navigated this alone for months to years creating anxiety, depression and difficulty in relationships, including their relationship with themself. In therapy I take a person-centered approach and want to hear your story. There is so much noise from the world and I attempt to create a space that is quiet from all the external influences in order to help you discover your identity and self acceptance.
A message to the parents:
For many parents, discovering that their teen or adult child is questioning their sexuality or gender may come as a surprise. You may feel a sense of loss, grieve, or feel it is a crisis.
Often, as parents attempt to navigate this time, their relationship with the child may become quite rocky. It is really important for parents to allow themselves time to work through this discovery and seek help when necessary. Let therapy be your support as you find how to best support your child on this journey.
Regardless of how things appear with your child, they have most likely been in turmoil through their personal journey. Listening is the best tool in understanding your child. Children are working toward their own self acceptance, and rejection (or perceived rejection) may lead to increased depression and anxiety. In counseling, I can work with parents through the grieving process. Often, we can also work on facilitating meaningful and healthy conversations with the child and other family members that can bring healing to the entire family system.
